ODASST.ARC 144384 12-31-86 Organization Diagnosis expert system v1.0
U/L by David Geerinck. Oh, the jargon some of us use in our professions!
Get a load of this quote from the doc:
"The Organization Diagnosis Assistant ... is an expert system shell and
related utilities that helps an executive to (1) diagnose his/her
organization so that s/he can create programs or system that will address
certain dimensions of the organization in an Organization Development
change program; (2) experiment with the various dimensions s/he may want to
address in an organization development program and see the effects prior to
even implementing the program or system via a simulation; (3) learn and
explore the "what if's" of an organization from the perspective of a human
resources professional."
If you can read the above without your eyes glazing over, this is probably
your program. If not ....
TAXPLAN4.ARC 15360 12-31-86 Lotus worksheet to compute 86-87-88 taxes
U/L by Rowland Archer. Version 1.4 of a WKS that will compute your taxes
for the 3 years indicated. Assuming the author's information and formulae
are correct, this is an easy to use and helpful planning tool. It may also
foment a taxpayer's rebellion as many folks figure out the tax increase
they're going to suffer during the 1987 "transition" year!
SYORG10.ARC 63488 12-31-86 Calendar, to-do list in SYMPHONY worksheets
U/L by Rowland Archer. To me, a symphony is something for which one goes
to the Kennedy Center. In short, I don't have the program so can't
evaluate this file.

BB645.ARC 130048 12-31-86 Text editor/macros/windws/TSR opt/v6.45 12/86
Where has this editor been hiding? "Black Beard" 5.15 was only just
uploaded, and now here's 6.45. Perhaps, this program is not making the
rounds of the boards because of its absolutely hideous name, which
undoubtedly makes all sysops, including me, nervous? Yet, it apparently is
a perfectly legitimate shareware product. Well, anyway, here it is, with a
raft of bug fixes and even a simple "dumb" terminal mode. There's
obviously a lot of work going into this program by the author. How about
spending five minutes, fella, coming up with a better name and getting rid
of the pirate logos in the documentation and elsewhere? U/L by Stephen
Falatko.
OMEGA.ARC 54078 12-31-86 Omega-Term X/Ymodem /small/ v1.00
A first release of a new comm program written in assembler (but no source
included -- drat) implementing single-file Ymodem and Xmodem/CRC transfers.
No terminal emulation, and not much else to distinguish it from quite a few
others except its size -- the executable is less than 30K and it runs in
128K RAM. As with any first release, there are some bugs, but it looks
basically sound. Note: The documentation is truncated at the end of the
glossary and before the index, although the arc was valid. It won't affect
your use of the program as the docs are barely necessary anyway). U/L by
Stephen Falatko.
PCO323.ARC 120413 12-31-86 PC-Outline! 3.23SW 12/15/86 X'cllnt Shareware
12-31-86 Only change since 1.08C is Maxthink to PCO
12-31-86 conversion prgm/Now owned by Brown Bag SW
Well, congratulations to Brown Bag Software for finally getting their act
together. After they bought PC-Outline from John Friend, the shareware
versions they distributed were a mess --- a result of a very half-assedly
done conversion of the program to try to make it look just a little
different. With this release, they've stopped that nonsense. The program
is PCO.EXE again, it looks for *.PCO outline files, etc. (no more of this
*.BBO stuff that was implemented in only some of their files and led to
confusion).
All that being said, there is absolutely NOTHING different about this
version of PC-Outline! as compared to John Friend's last release (1.08C)
except that the shareware price is higher and you're told to send the money
to Brown Bag Software, of course. If you already have 1.08C, there is no
reason to download this new version. There is one new utility in the
package that converts Maxthink outlines to PCO format, and if folks who
have 1.08C need that util, I'll happily break a copy out of the arc for
you.
U/L by Brian Miller.

CLIPTIPS.ARC 23808 12-31-86 Clipper tips and topics from NPN on Source
U/L by Carl Slutter.
LIST569B.ARC 14048 09-02-86 Last "small" (6K RAM) version of Buerg's LIST
Vern Buerg was kind enough to send this along the other day. It contains
the last "small" version of LIST before many new features were added to the
program and it became "Son of LIST" (current version is 6.0J). LIST 6.0J
requires a minimum of 64K RAM in which to operate; LIST 5.69B will run with
6K of RAM free, and is thus useful in small multi-tasking partitions
(exactly the need I had for it). I've put it on the system for those few
of you who have a similar need, and dated it with its release date so folks
who do a "N"ew search won't be confused.

ELMUPDT2.ARC 22528 12-30-86 Update #2 Shell script for ELM 1.1
ELMUPDT3.ARC 17408 12-30-86 Update #3 Shell script for ELM 1.1
U/L by Ed Clarke. Three shell scripts that will correct various bugs, etc.
in the ELM front end for the Unix mail system that is available here, an
excellent package.
DCWHERE.ARC 14620 12-30-86 Full-scrn WHEREIS/multi-drives/attribs search
U/L by Ed Hopper. A full-screen, kind of colorful, WHEREIS program that
automatically searches across multiple drives (at least it did when I ran
it here and I sure didn't tell it to go looking anywhere -- came as a heck
of a surprise to me!). In addition to flexible DOS wildcard specs, you can
also tell this program to search for files with certain attributes. Nice.
DMA.ARC 5730 12-30-86 Turbo Pas INC for direct screen writes
U/L by Dan Severance.
NRU.ARC 16194 12-30-86 Rico Utils/free mem/disk/chmod/mode/etc 122086
U/L by Paul Kopit. Looks to be a nicely done, multi-purpose, all-in-one,
get-rid-of-all-them-other-little-programs-on-your-disk, program (phew!).
The price you pay for having them all combined here is some extra
keystrokes in invoking the program, but that could be dealt with by BAT
files or CED/PCED synonyms.

TEMPDOOM.ARC 58368 12-29-86 Lotus 123 (1A & 2) tutorial WKS game/partial
U/L by Melvin Douglas. "Templates of Doom is an interactive adventure game
tutorial for Lotus 1-2-3 version 1a, 2 and compatibles. This is a
demonstration version consisting of 3 of the 16 Adventure Templates, a
score card and an instruction template."
MH1227A.ARC 131072 12-29-86 Mankin's MiniHost BBS system 12/27/86 /Ymodem
U/L by Ed Johnson. Latest revisions:
12-27-86:
Ymodem implemented... PCPurcuit'ers rejoice! (now lets see if it works...)
12-22-86:
Added feature to read (Y)our Private Mail.
Added TIMELIMIT=60 for those who require time limits.
COMMENT: At least the addition of Ymodem isn't trivial. There are nearly
daily updates to this program.
EMS_REPT.ARC 14780 12-29-86 Expanded Memory Report /Pages, handles, etc.
U/L by Loren Olson. Gives just about identical info to the program in
DEMM.ARC and the latter comes with source code and is a whole lot smaller.
On the other hand, this is "prettier." Different strokes for ....
PC-KD322.ARC 171975 12-29-86 PC-KEY-DRAW 3.22 Graphics Ed/CAD/Slides
PC-KDLIB.ARC 79762 12-29-86 Sample pics, etc for PC-KEY-DRAW Lib 1
PC-KEY-DRAW is a bit of a puzzlement to me. It's a very powerful graphics
screen creation program, similar in many respects to better known
commercial programs like PC Paint, etc. that also can do high-res
graphics. Yet, here's the latest version (I think) and it still comes with
BASRUN.EXE, meaning the author is still compiling it with BASCOM 1.0. And,
this is a "try it and if you use it you'd better pay for it, or else"
program which, every time you exit from it, asks you whether you're
registered yet and waits for your answer (hitting any key is sufficient --
I wondered if I was going to get an insult when I answered [N]o -- I
didn't). The docs for the BBS version are expurgated, a euphemism for
crippled -- if you want full documentation, you have to register. In
fairness, I must say I've seen much more severe cases of doc crippling
(Fansi Console being the first example that comes to mind). As far as I
can tell, the program itself is not crippled at all. Finally, would you
believe the registration fee is $100? Is that really in the shareware
ballpark?

December, 1986:
DSZ1222.ARC 33584 12-29-86 Z/Ymodem module/run frm other comm prgs 122286
This one works (restores the comm port properly on exit back to the
original comm program), unlike earlier versions of DSZ that I had tried.
Downloaded today direct from Tele-Godzilla (can you believe that name for
Forsberg's BBS), this is even the current version, and that's likely to
remain true for at least a couple of more hours <grin?>. DSZ can be
invoked via DOS shell, etc. from other comm programs, and adds Ymodem
(single file and batch) and Zmodem (don't ask -- the protocol doc is on the
system) capabilities to that program. Oh, what the hell -- Zmodem is yet
another sliding-windows type xmodem family protocol, designed to deal with
delays on packet nets, etc. It's nifty (I use it for batch xfers with a
Unix computer) but, in my experience, slower than Ymodem on regular lines
where there are no (noticeable) packet delays.
ALTER2.ARC 2665 12-29-86 Change file(s) dates and/or attributes v2.20
A very easy to use program, with excellent command-line syntax, for
changing the date, time, or attributes of any file. Wildcards are
supported and the program is fast and small.
RESLOG.ARC 15360 12-29-86 Gans' mem-res disk/pgm activity logger
U/L by Pete Olympia. Once you activate this, it starts logging to disk the
start and stop time of every command you enter (not just DOS commands,
programs, too.). There are several other programs of this type on the
system, but this one is fairly easy to use and has pretty decent reporting
capabilities. [I hate to keep sounding like an ad for Chris Dunford's
PCED, but command logging is built-in to PCED and as I already have PCED
loaded anyway, I'd be a lot more likely to activate its logging capabilties
then to start up any other program.]
RESPRO.ARC 7168 12-29-86 Gans' do-it-all TSR manager/controller
U/L by Pete Olympia. Loaded prior to any other mem-res program, this one
will, upon hitting Alt-`, show you what's in memory and allow you to
de-activate one or more of your mem-res utils. They can later be activated
again. No memory is released on deactivation, and the use is presumably
when something mem-res is causing a conflict so you want to disable it
temporarily. You can also remove programs from memory, but you have to do
that one at a time, last loaded first, of course. Somewhat similiar in
concept to Kokkonen's MARK and RELEASE programs, this program by Eric Gans
has additional capabilities but is, to me, clumsier to use. It also uses
10K of memory which is more than MARKs would unless you are using an awful
lot of them. Plus, I usually put a MARK ALL before loading any mem-res
programs (and I load a ton of them on my work computer) and then can get
rid of them all at once with a RELEASE ALL command. It's a lot more work
to do that with RESPRO. Still, the additional capabilities here may be
useful to you.

SOLVE-IT.ARC 72704 12-28-86 TSR Financial Calculations -- very complete
U/L by Rowland Archer. 31 financial calc routines with a nice, friendly
doc. The version in this archive is the memory-resident version. I gather
from the docs that there is also a non-TSR version, but it's not here. In
any event, you can MARK/RELEASE this version if you wish (I tried it and it
works fine).
ARCUNIX2.FQX 4497 12-28-86 Unix source fixes to ARCUNIX2 as of 12-26-86
U/L by Ed Clarke. Some mods to the Unix version of the ARC 5.1 compatible
Unix source that is on this system. The Unix folks are not going to be
thrilled to hear that, just as they're on the verge of being able to
achieve compatibility with the DOS ARC format, someone has come along and
added yet another compression algorithm without releasing source code for
it, by which I mean "squash"ing as added in PKARC 2.0.
ADVBAS28.ARC 65536 12-28-86 v2.8 of new commands for BASIC Compilers
U/L and written by Tom Hanlin. Update notes for this excellent collection
of routines that can be called from your compiled basic programs:
ADVBAS 2.8, 12/28/86:
Assorted file control functions have been added. MLOAD is a BLOAD
command for compilers which don't include it. EXIST lets you test
for the existence of a given file. A set of new file I/O functions
allow low-level control of file access. Among other advantages,
these functions allow file handling in subprograms (since error codes
are returned at the time of error, rather than triggering an error
trap) and support file-level networking/multitasking control (whereas
BASIC only supports record-level control). These functions include
FCREATE and FOPEN to open files, FREAD and FWRITE to access them,
FSETEND and FSETREC to move the file pointer, and FCLOSE to close the
file.

CDD100.ARC 2321 12-28-86 Dunford's Change Drive & Dir /Best w/PCED
CDD F:\SUBDIR will not only log you from your current drive to the F:
drive, but will also move you into the specified subdir. There are other
programs on this system that can do the same, but this one is very small
and fast (less than 1K). More importantly, for users of Chris' PCED (the,
enhanced, commercial version of the CED program that is on this system),
CDD can be installed as a CED extension (CDD /I) at which point it might as
well be an internal DOS command -- it need not be in your path, and no disk
access takes place when the command is invoked. As a user installed
command, CDD swallows a whopping! 768 bytes of memory <grin>.
I've added SYN 'CD' 'CDD' to my PCED configuration file and thus this
command completely replaces CD on my computer, shortening a lot of commands
(and other synonyms) to change drives and dirs. NOTE: Chris warns not to
try to MARK/RELEASE CDD, but you can put a mark in prior to CED itself at
which point, with one command, you can release CED and all extensions to
it.
SQSHINFO.DOC 4096 12-28-86 Info on squash algorithm used in PKARC 2.0
U/L by Dave Klein. Well, here's some info at least on the new "squash"
algorithm that Phil Katz has added to PKARC 2.0. Whether it's enough info
for other programmers to make their arc utils compatible (assuming they
think the new algorithm is good enough to deserve to be added to the ARC
repertoire) remains to be seen. Until this all sorts itself out, let me
ask you again: PLEASE do not use the new "squash" algorithm in PKARC 2.0
for files uploaded to this system. If you insist on using PKARC 2.0, add
an /OC switch on the command line to prevent "squash"ing from being used,
e.g., PKARC /OC A TEST *.EXE. That's not much fun to type, so you really
might as well continue to use PKARC 1.2 or ARCA 1.22 which are both on this
system.
CPRINT43.ARC 29696 12-28-86 Source code/ascii file print util v4.3
U/L by Craig Smith. v4.3 - corrected a bug associated with lines which
start with a CR.
121V10.ARC 77824 12-28-86 PC-to-PC comm (CHAT during xfer) v1.0
12-28-86 Must run on both ends/not for BBS calling
U/L by Robert Holmgren. A comm program that supports Xmodem transfers and
allows you to "chat" with the other side even while the file transfer is in
progress. Both sides MUST be running this program, so it is not useful at
all for BBS communications, but you may find it very useful indeed if you
do one-to-one (got the name?) communications with others who could use this
package.

VERBACK.ARC 18432 12-27-86 Extensive DOS BACKUP verification 12/86
U/L by Gerhard Barth. "VerBack verifies that:
o All hard disk files are backed up on the floppies
o The data in all hard disk files is readable
o The data in all backup files is readable
o The data in the backup files exactly matches the data stored on
the hard disk
o All special files used by the Backup and Restore commands are
present on the backup floppies"
The BBS version is a subset of the commercial program, but presumably
contains all the above features. I don't use DOS BACKUP/RESTORE and
haven't tried this program.
PIBASY42.ARC 53120 12-27-86 Async routines for Turbo Pascal, v4.2
U/L and written by Philip Burns. Modified to deal with changes in the 3.02
version of Borland's TP compiler, particularly the new way "delay"s are
handled. This is excellent code that many of you have used to create your
own Turbo Pascal communications programs. It would be nice, to put it
mildly, if as Phil requests in the docs, some of you shared your
improvements and corrections.
PMCS12.ARC 41856 12-27-86 Poor Mans Catalog System for disks v1.2
U/L by John Dove. A clever use of batch files and exisiting utils to
create a quick and dirty disk catalog system. The problem is this arc
contains copies of programs that are all elsewhere on the system, and not
necessarily the most recent revisions (and even if they are today, as
things go, they won't be soon). The major change in this revision is the
use of the multiple key sort capabilities of Bill Parke's SORTS program to
enhance the system.

There are also a few that are just awful. The BACKUP utils are utterly
useless. But, the change date and time util is very good, the clear screen

screens very easily (actually, more easily than POPEDIT2), and the
calculator program is quite good. You may find others as well that you
think are useful. The package is worth a look.

Hmm.. an editor named "Black Beard" with a pirate logo on the title page
tends to make one a bit dubious. But, from all other outward appearances,
this is a legitimate shareware program and not a bad one at that. A fairly
powerful editor, that can be run either ram-resident or not, with some
pretty advanced features. The documentation ain't great, but it's
adequate. If you register, you get the current version and a "Black Beard"
coffee mug. What??? Does anyone have more info on this program? U/L by

RH-MAN.ARC 79105 12-24-86 'Right Hand Man'/SideKick clone/v3.3 8/86
This is an excellent SideKick-type program, but actually has quite a few
more features than SK. Yes, it has a calculator, a notepad (nowhere near
as good as SK's), an ascii table, an appointment calendar (MUCH better than
SK's). No, it doesn't have a dialer. But, it does have DOS commands, a
pretty good address book type program, an alarm/reminder capability, a
typewriter mode, macro capabilities, powerful import/export features and
more. It can also be run ram-resident or not, configured for the amount
of memory to be used in resident mode, and the hotkey, colors, home dir,
etc. can all be configured. It's not crippled at all and is well
documented, plus it has context sensitive on-line help. It even has an
uninstall from memory command. All in all, a winner, well worth a look if
you're not already a SK addict. My only complaint, other than the
primitive editor compared to SK's, is the speed with which it writes to the
screen. It isn't all that zippy on a 4.77MhZ PC. On something faster, you
won't mind. U/L by Fred Bauer.
CBT.ARC 110692 12-24-86 Computer Based Training Language v3.01 3/86
" CBT is a language designed for the easy creation of Computer Based
Training. CBT is intended for use by the non-programmer. Programming
Demonstrations - You can use CBT to demonstrate the operation of a program
without needing to produce a single line of programming code. Computer
Based Training - With CBT it is not necessary for a programmer to produce a
computer based training program. " The only person I have to train to use
this computer is me (one of these days), but this program is
well-documented and looks professional. U/L by Fred Bauer.
MEMSUM31.ARC 35730 12-24-86 Mem-res: Tells total mem and amount free 3.1
A minor update to a mem-res program that tells you how much memory you have
free. I still prefer the non-resident version of this program and it's
also on the system. U/L by Stacy Hornstein.
THRASHER.ARC 43001 12-24-86 Test for optimum # of BUFFERS/ v1.0 12/86
This was uploaded as TRASHER.ARC and my first thought was "Oh my, better
get that one off of here for testing quick." Actually, it was misnamed.
This is really just a disk read/write speed tester with some batch file
techniques for testing your HD's performance with BUFFERS set for different
values in CONFIG.SYS. U/L by Stacy Hornstein.

DIRNLY11.ARC 45056 12-24-86 Chk if files on BBS dir's exist/ANY # files
U/L and written by Ken Goosens, DIRONLY compares a BBS's file dirs with the
files that actually exist on disk to make sure no listed files are missing.
Should work with RBBS and PCBoard and any other BBS program that keeps
dir files in similar format. Major advantage over other programs of this
kind is that there is no limit on the number of files on the system that
this program can handle. Quick Basic source code included.
PSSAMORT.ARC 34048 12-24-86 Loan amortization with schedule printing
U/L by Boyd Ellison.
IGNIT14.ARC 21760 12-24-86 Speeds boot/passwrd protctn/704K/more 1.4
U/L by James Bach. This program is for an IBM PC/XT or 100% compatible
(right down to the dip switches on the mother board) and that leaves me
out, so a quote from the doc will have to do:
"PC-IGNITION Starts your computer FAST, with Logon Security. PC-IGNITION
can allow your computer to go from power-on to ready in 15 seconds, with
704k of ram, saving 78 seconds of computer startup time. It will also give
your computer a hardware type of security, by restricting the full use of
your system unless PC-IGNITION is run using a valid password."
IBMAT6MB.ARC 4096 12-24-86 IBM Announcement - IBM AT 6MB combo card

AT memory card, but get a load of them there prices. Whooooweeeee!
FASTCHK2.ARC 16996 12-24-86 More info than CHKDSK and very fast v2

U/L by Stephen Falatko. The latest version of this rather controversial
assembler. This arc contains the updated COM file only; support files are
in the 2.16 arcs. No indication in the arc as to what's been changed for
this version.

WORLD2.ARC 111232 12-23-86 'The World' Map program v2.0 /Graphics
U/L by Melvin Douglas. When WORLD 1.0 was first sent here quite a while
ago, I though it would be a yawn and few of you would be interested. Shows
what I know --- it has been one of the most popular files on this system.
What are you folks doing with your computers? Anyway, here's 2.0 with too
many changes to list. WORLD is a very powerful map program, with a
unique 'zoom' feature to do a closeup of a selected area. Graphics monitor
required, of course, and the higher the resolution the better. Not my
personal cup of tea, but my hats off to the author for what must have been
a ton of work in accumulating and entering all the data.
DOSTIPS5.ARC 82944 12-23-86 DOS tips 5th edition July-December 1986
U/L and written by Dean Wood. A continuation of Dean Wood's excellent
series of "Tips" culled from various magazines. Subjects covered this time
include: Creating and using DOS batch files; Changing colors from DOS;
Making the DOS environment better and faster; Better use of the DOS FIND
command; Renaming and redefining keys; Enhancing the keyboard;
Miscellaneous DOS tips; Printing from DOS. If you know you read it
somewhere, but can't remember where, Dean's collection will help you find
it.

GUDLUK28.ARC 64000 12-23-86 GoodLook 2.8-Side by Side file compare
U/L and written by John Dove. Update notes:
2.8 Fixed a still minor bug as in 2.7.
Added the ability to enter *.BAK as file 2 to use the filename of
file1 with the new extension (filename.bak). This includes the
ability to use b:*.bak or b:\newpath\*.bak also.
MRE.ARC 20480 12-23-86 Simple, mem-res editor 1.0/Uses 98K RAM!
U/L by Bob Golgolab. A very simple editor (no word wrap, reform, etc.)
that takes up an ungodly 98K of memory. For gosh sakes, SideKick loads in
less memory than that and has a very full-featured editor.

Brief descriptions and reviews of new files added to the system during
December, 1986:
PKX34A20.COM 58368 12-23-86 Katz's ARChive utils: PKXARC 3.4 & PKARC 2.0
12-23-86 PKARC now uses a "squash" method that is
12-23-86 incompatible with other ARC programs: Please
12-23-86 do NOT use it for files uploaded to this BBS
We've got a problem, folks. This latest version of Phil Katz's archive
util adds a new variation of L-Z-W compression called "squashing." The
claim is that it will reduce the size of text files by an additional 10%.
All well and good, but the new method is NOT compatible with SEA's ARC
program, which started all of this, or with other SEA compatible arc utils,
such as Vern Buerg's ARCA, ARCE and ARCV utils. Equally important for this
BBS, PKARC 2.0 will produce archives that cannot be read by the ArcDoor
program on this system -- the program will simply abort if it runs into a
"squashed" file.
The doc files provided with this new version of PKARC do not detail the
specifications for the squash algorithm, thus making it difficult, if not
impossible, for other programs to achieve compatibility.
As a result, PLEASE DO NOT USE PKARC 2.0 TO CREATE ARCHIVES UPLOADED TO
THIS SYSTEM unless you use the /OC switch which prevents the program from
using the new squash method. That's really a pain, so you might as well
continue to use PKARC 1.2, which will remain here for downloading, or Vern
Buerg's ARCA program (current version 1.22).
One would hope that Phil Katz plans to release detailed specs, if not
actual code, for the new algorithm as soon as possible. If and when he
does, it may be possible soon thereafter for other programs, including the
ArcDoor on this system, to achieve compatibility. For now, again, PLEASE
don't use this program's new squash method for files uploaded here. U/L by
Spence Lloyd.

DM21.ARC 54784 12-23-86 Directory Master 2.1 11/18/86 Sweep Util
A capable sweep utility marred by no documentation (the on-line help is
good but hardly an adequate substitute) and a pyramid commission scheme
distribution method. v2.1 released 10/29/86 was on this system; this is
version 2.1 released 11/18/86. Got me. I'll stick with QFILER, thanks.

Brief descriptions and reviews of new files added to the system during
December, 1986:
AUTOSAVE.ARC 14796 12-22-86 TSR: Timed save of work/config for any prgrm
Interesting program. It's a mem-res utility that sits in background
waiting for an opportunity to jump in and save your work periodically when
you aren't keeping the machine busy. The defaults are every 5 minutes when
it detects 30 seconds of keyboard inactivity, and those defaults cannot be
changed in this BBS version. The program can be told the correct
keystrokes to save your work from just about any spreadsheet, word
processing or dbms program, or most anything else, and sample command lines
for popular programs are provided. Does it help to describe this as an
automatic STACKEY sequence running as a timed event? Probably not. Oh
well, it's small. Download and give it a try.

EDIR100.ARC 31744 12-22-86 Edit files' names, dates, dir order/Crippled
The more interesting features of this program, including the ability to
reclaim wasted subdir space, are crippled. What's left is similar to
DIREDIT and ORDER (see below). This file will be kept on the system a VERY
short time for those of you who want to see this demo. U/L by James Bach.

DWC-A.EXE 60416 12-21-86 Another nonARC archiver/Alpha/12/19/86
U/L by Rahul Dhesi. This is getting a bit complicated. DWC is yet
another archive utility, patterned after, but incompatible with SEA's ARC.
That now makes 3, the third being ZOO. The main advantages claimed for DWC
are speed and compression efficiency, but it also adds some interesting new
commands. This is a "prototype" version, so should be used with caution
(the DWC format will NOT be supported on this board at the moment, so
please do not upload files made with this utility). Note, the EXE file is
self-extracting, and will produce a doc file. Rahul also uploaded
SOURCE.DWC, the source code for DWC in DWC format, but it wouldn't extract
so I've been forced to erase it. Anyone have a good copy?

TELX112B.ARC 57308 12-21-86 / communications program/Fast/Ymodem / DOC
U/L by Loren Olson. Basically, 3 changes noted in the update docs: (1)
The crash problem has finally been fixed (?); (2) Some additions to the
host mode, including the ability to shut it down remotely; (3) A new files
dir routine which shows transfer times, or the option to run your favorite
external dir program.
Many of you have reported the mysterious crashitis with earlier versions of
Telix. It will be interesting to see if this version really does have that
one licked (I'm a bad candidate to test that problem as the program seems
to like me and runs quite solidly). Beyond that, Telix has been reviewed
here several times before -- it's a small, fast, capable comm program.
HISTRY11.ARC 13312 12-20-86 Command history recall/C source v1.1 12/18/86
U/L and written by Mike Rubenstein. An excellent command recall program.
For further info, see review of CMDHIST.ARC below (which was version 1.0).
Changes in 1.1:
- Function keys 1-5 have been implemented in a manner much more consistent
with the standard MSDOS function keys.
- If supplied by the calling program, the buffer line may be used. This
allows use of the function keys in the few programs (such as EDLIN) which
are designed for use of the keys.

BENCH4.ARC 244694 12-20-86 PC Mag Benchmark Series Release 4 (10/86)
This is the latest revision of PC Mag's excellent series of benchmarking
tests for the PC & AT, dated 10-18-86, but only recently made available
(see discussion in 1-13-87 issue of the magazine). The major change in
this release is the new hard disk test. PC Mag has abandoned the Core disk
test in favor of 2 new ones. The first, like the Core test, uses BIOS
calls and will not work on disks that are loaded via device drivers. The
second uses standard DOS calls, should work on any disk, and avoids size
limitations, according to the magazine.
All of the other tests are here as well, including CPU, memory, printer and
monitor tests. This is an excellent collection, well worth having if you
do serious comparison of systems or fine tuning of system performance.
NOTE: Unlike the "Programming Utilities," PC Mag has repeatedly made it
clear that it encourages free distribution of the benchmark programs,
including posting on other BBS systems in addition to PC Mag's own (from
which these tests came, at an agonizing 1200 baud!).

December, 1986:
MAKMYDAY.ARC 95232 12-19-86 Cal/Sched, Time Logs, Expenses/non-res 2.0
" MakeMyDay! is a complete computerized Time Management system for the IBM
PC family of computers. It is an Appointment Calendar, a Job Scheduler, a
Time Log and an Expense Account Manager. It can be used to keep track of
all of these things for one person, or for several people. It makes use of
your line printer to produce all the worksheets and printed reports you
need to organize your business and personal schedule. "
Alas, it all sounds better than it is. Though the program is capable
enough (and I'm sure as heck not saying I could do any better!), it's a
whole lot of keystrokes to do anything with this program, and to me, that
defeats its purpose. This kind of program is either easy and fast to use
or it won't succeed in getting you to keep these kinds of records
conscientiously. This one wouldn't do it for me. The fact that you can't
generate a report of your appointments to the screen, but only to the
printer, is also, to me, a significant omission. In short, this one didn't
make my day.

RMAP.ARC 4096 12-18-86 Memory-resident memory map program v3.00/COM
U/L by Tom Drinkard. Modeled after Kokkonen's MAPMEM program, this one was
written in ASM (source not included unfortunately) and provides much the
same info. The difference is that it is mem-res so you can pop it up

It swallows about 9K itself.
QDUPS1-0.ARC 41984 12-18-86 Display and mark/delete duplicate files
U/L by Vern Buerg. A very powerful and useful utility, this one will
search across multiple drives for duplicate files and then present you with
the opportunity to delete selectively those dupes. The program is
reasonably fast and easy to use. No real doc, but adequate on-line help
and a very professional effort.

PATCH32.ARC 89539 12-16-86 Patches for DOS 3.2
These have been circulating BBS systems for some time under various names,
such as DOS32NEW, but this is the first time I've seen the arc with all the
normal files IBM includes, giving reason to think this one is complete.
None of the patches is major -- they deal with somewhat obscure bugs in
BASICA, COMMAND.COM, DISKCOPY and XCOPY that you'd probably never run into
in normal use, but here they are so you'll have them if you need them. U/L
by Bill Andrus. NOTE: If you have any notion that this is a free way to

best of the DOS more extensions I have seen. It is fast, compact and
capable. It acts both as a page-by-page type command and as a filter. It
has decent search capabilities, and can display Wordstar files as if they
were plain ascii (redirect the output to a file and you've done a
WS-to-ascii conversion). The command line syntax is very good: XMORE *.DOC
*.TXT READ.ME works, and you'll proceed through the files in the order they
are found. Curiously, the files must be in your current dir; neither other
drives nor subdirs are supported with one limited exception: XMORE <
\TEST\HELLO.TXT will work; XMORE \TEST\HELLO.TXT won't. Finally, you can
call up your editor at any time from within a document, edit, exit, and
proceed with your viewing. [The default editor must be called EDIT but I
patched my EXE file to look for PE instead with debug.] NOTE: If you have
DoubleDOS and RAW loaded, you're in trouble with this program -- it won't
always take input. Some other programs are like that, a bit of a mystery.
Neither DDOS nor RAW alone cause the problem. U/L by Ed Johnson.
TT097.ARC 61946 12-16-86 Turbo-Term,v0.97,small/fast/Qmodem-like comm
The major advantage of Turbo-Term is size and speed. By no means as
capable as recent versions of Qmodem (and a far cry from Qmodem 2.4 which
is due ADN/RSN), this subset may be all you need. For some reason, this
one remains perpetually in beta state and shows up without any
documentation, but if you know Qmodem, you know TT. Minor changes in this
release, according to Ed Johnson, who U/L the file.

GUDLUK27.ARC 63360 12-16-86 GoodLook 2.7-File compare-side by side!
GoodLook is a side by side (actually, one on top of the other) file compare
program to find differences in ASCII files, particularly in source code
programs. It displays the two files one over the other, with the compared
lines together in the middle. There is a "find next mismatch" function key
to locate the next spot where the lines are different. A very useful and
increasingly powerful program. The latest changes:
2.6 Fixed the color option so that it shows the colors as they are
installed.
Changed the Color option to Configuration option since it there are
several option to change.
Added a direct to video write routine to speed up the display when
scrolling by 10 lines and when displaying help screens.
2.7 Released immediately to fix a bug in the display function: it would
display only file 1 in both windows after a search.

FLICK21.ARC 81664 12-15-86 Cmd file processor/graphics presentations 2.1
U/L by Tony Rood. " The FLICKER program is a graphics command processor.
Its primary function is to provide a means for creating sequences of images
and sound that may be used for store displays, for instruction, or for
business (or other) presentations. In its current form, the program does
contain limited facilities for creation of image files. These features
augment the basic display functions to create interesting effects not
possible in most "slideshow" presentation systems."
DOODLE.ARC 11136 12-15-86 Drawing pgm (for kids) with C source

colorful. NOTE: The name of the program is actually QUIKGRAF, but it's by
another author and quite different from the business graphics program in
QUIKGRAF.ARC.
SETDIR2.ARC 13056 12-15-86 V2.0 - Use to restore current dir w/asm/doc
U/L by Bill Gibson. "SETDIR sets the environment string 'CURDIR' with the
current directory. Once this has been done it is very simple to restore
the current directory after it has been changed by some other program.
This technique has distinct advantages over other techniques that create
files (CD >CURDIR.FIL) or modify the interupt vector (PUSHDIR/POPDIR from
PC magazine and/or PC OUTLINE). It is much faster, creates no files,
cannot be impacted by programs that modify the interrupt vector, and
requires only one very small (<512 byte) program." Nicely done and with
complete source provided.

DIREDIT4.ARC 66161 12-14-86 Edit/Sort DOS directories v1.40 P.R. Fletcher
By the author of HDTST273, and like that program, very powerful and a bit
frightening. Allows you to manipulate the order of files in your subdirs
pretty much at will, in addition to the normal sort orders of by filename,
etc. The idea of all of this is to get your most frequently used files up
to the start of the dir where they'll be found more quickly. This may be
taking being a speed freak one step too far. A bit complex to use, but
that's a function of the program's power. Not for beginners.
EZTICKLE.ARC 50614 12-14-86 EZ-TICKLE 1.0/Reminder/To-Do-Lists/Not mem-res
I still haven't found the tickle program I want. This one's not bad,
but... The strength of the program is the ease with which you can schedule
recurring events (e.g. pay the mortgage on the 14th of every month, meet
with Trudie at 4 p.m. every Thursday afternoon (ahem), etc.). The major
weaknesses of the program are speed of screen updates and report generation
(slow.....) and relatively clumsy search capabilities.

STACKEY2.ARC 107375 12-12-86 Pass commands to programs fr .BAT/[P]CED v2.0
12-12-86 Better than KEY-FAKE/FAKEY by CTRLALT folks
12-12-86 Complete ASM source/indispensable/get it!
U/L by Tom Drinkard. I cannot begin to do this program justice within the
space constraints of this bulletin. KEY-FAKE by PC Mag was good; FAKEY by
the SEA folks was much better; STACKEY 1.0 was better still; STACKEY v2.0
is just short of amazing. I'm opposed as a matter of religious principle
to typing one more keystroke than is necessary when operating a computer.
By carefully building batch files or CED/PCED synonyms, STACKEY lets you
put a series of keystrokes into the program automatically for you everytime
it loads. The program is easy to use, now has on-line help, and the
complete assembler source is provided. The documentation for this release
has grown substantially, and it contains a wealth of useful info that
extends well beyond the program itself. Some of the other new features in
v2.0:
- Color support on the CGA including borders, background in
medium resolution graphics and palette change
- Color support on the EGA both temporary color changes and
changes to permanent palettes when used in conjunction
with a program that moves the permanent palettes to RAM
- A separate program that moves the permanent palettes to RAM
- A utilities mode that allows you to switch monitors, ports,
cursor size, mode and 25 vs 43 lines. Variable beeps and
a command to wait from .05 seconds to 30 minutes before
resuming
- Possibility to dump the screen to a file or printer at some
point in the middle of a BATch file
- The equivalent of DOS' pause but without a message (so you
can supply your own) with the possibility of having the
<Enter> key alone accepted or of having the BATch file
aborted under a Y/N choice
- Modes to handle programs that flush the buffer after every
keystroke
All of the above features have been added at the cost of approximately 100
bytes of memory usage, a truly remarkable achievement.
NOTE: There's a small mistake in the sample batch file provided to load
REFLEX on a CGA -- the :CGA label is missing. I don't want to tamper with
the author's work so I've left it as is; you should have little trouble
finding the error, and it sure is nice to have Reflex come up in color and
load the file you specified on the command line, all while you just marvel
at STACKEY doing the work for you.

EDWIN15B.ARC 122880 12-11-86 Kokkonen's Fast WS-like editor v1.5B/Excellent
U/L by Spence LLoyd. A winner -- some wonderful new features in this
version of Edwin. To start:
"EDWIN is a programmer's editor based on the Borland Editor Toolbox. It
offers multiple editing windows and buffers, block moves between windows,
undeletion, online help, Pascal structure editing, macro record and
playback, DOS invocation from the editor, and file size limited only by
available RAM."
But EDWIN is more than just a programmer's editor, including such features
as paragraph reform and word wrap not found in many others. There are just
too many changes in this release to even try to summarize them here -- the
editor is vastly improved and it was already very good. One feature of
note that I've just never seen before: Edwin allows you to customize the
command set. By default, it's similar to WS and the Turbo Pascal editor.
But, when you change it (I always change them to be more like PE II), the
on-line help file is automatically changed to match the new commands you
have chosen. That's a marvelous touch, and one I wish IBM would emulate
for PE. Other new features are faster screen displays, a wonderful Zoom
mode for windowed files, a much better status line display, improved
documentation (though still the weak link), default loading of a macro
file, and a pretty fair number of bug fixes.
In short, this is an excellent editor and well worth a look if you don't
already have one to which you are addicted.

Holy #%&!. Not a small package this, and although the arcs are (I think)
complete in terms of the spreadsheet program itself, there are, I gather,
other files that make up the complete 3 disk set that is sent out by the
authors. This will do, thanks. As best I can tell after a pretty brief
look, this contains most of the normal spreadsheet functions and then some,
but is not particularly user-friendly. Provision is made for importing and
exporting data from/to other programs, and an "integration" ability is
claimed, but my limited look at the program just didn't involve exploration
of that feature. Feedback on this one from others who really do explore
it is very welcome. U/L by John "Thanks for the file, guy" DeCarlo.

on an arbitrary set of key fields selected in any order. Record lengths
can be variable, with up to 255 characters in each. The sorting keys can
be from one to 255 characters long, taken from columns in the records in
any order. Often used key-column orders can be saved within SORTS and
recalled by a single letter name. Any part or parts of the key can be
selected for reverse order sorting." I have a lot of batch files that are

set. The only drawback is the very rudimentary editing capability in the
POPEDIT program itself for designing the screens. If source had been
provided, that limitation could have easily been overcome. Sigh again.

LONGINT.ARC 5120 12-09-86 32 bit Turbo integers/functions/procs 12/86
An include library of procedures and functions for 32-bit integers in Turbo
Pascal. U/L and written by David Seidman.
MDIR.ARC 36992 12-09-86 Memory Resident Dir w ASM/supports 2 monitors
MDIR is a small, memory resident dir program. MDIR gives both an
"automatic" mode, where the current directory is shown sorted
alphabetically, and a "command line" mode, where MDIR will "screen" files
(like the DOS DIR command does), and display the file list with your choice
of sort mechanism (by date/time, name, extension, unsorted). This routine
takes about 14k of memory when installed. This routine will put the
directory on the "alternate" screen if two monitors are available. ASM
source included. U/L by Michael Pechnyo.
SBAT.ARC 18432 12-09-86 Interactive preprocessing sys for BAT files
Provides an enhancement to the DOS batch file processor. An input file is
preprocessed to prompt the user and incorporate their responses into the
into the .BAT file in a very flexible way. The values accepted can be any
string and can be substituted anywhere in the .BAT file, not only as
arguments but as labels or control statements. The same response may be
substituted into the .BAT file at as many points as you like. U/L by Tony
Rood.
MAX-MENU.ARC 22784 12-09-86 BATch cmd driver/menu system v1.1F
Egads -- yet ANOTHER menu program. Untested but it looks rather simple and
no competition for programs like AutoMaxx. U/L by Tony Rood.

MOVBASV4.ARC 17470 12-09-86 Move BASICA to clones,v4 w/ASM source/loaders
MOVBASIC allows you to run IBM's BASICA on a non-IBM clone. Contains v3 of
MOVBASIC (which had already been on this system) and some new loaders to
deal with problems some apparently had been having with certain clones (not
me). ASM source for both MOVBASIC itself and the new loaders is included.
COMMENT: Here we go again. There's nothing illegal, immoral or fattening,
to the best of my knowledge, about these programs themselves, but they can
certainly be used improperly. I do not wish to encourage the latter by
posting these files, but as one who has used MOVBASIC lawfully on my own
machines and found it useful, the files are posted with the expectation
that you will only do the same. In addition, the ASM source is downright
good and valuable in its own right. U/L by Don Udel.
HDPREP21.ARC 98643 12-09-86 General lo lev fmt & HD-HD backup/UNTESTED !!
There is NO way that I'm going to test low level format programs, folks, so
download and use at your own risk. This is an update to one that
was already on the system (v2.1 versus 1.0) but that was only determined by
dumping the EXE file -- it showed up with no DOC at all, so I took the
documentation from the earlier arc. It also showed up without the hard
disk to hard disk backup program by the same author so that, too, has been
taken from the earlier arc and included. U/L by Bob Shuck.
HDSOURCE.ARC 96256 12-09-86 HD diags w/GREAT disk-oriented .ASM sources
Contains the complete ASM source for the HDAT v2.1 advanced diagnostics and
low-level format programs already on this system. U/L by Jack Kilday, and
I'll happily take Jack's word for the fact that the ASM is "great". Jack
speaks ASM -- I'm still struggling with English.
ZIPPHONE.ARC 254976 12-09-86 Area code & local xchange vs ZIP xref by AT&T
Few of us would describe AT&T as the patron saint of BBS systems,
especially those who run up obscene monthly bills calling around long
distance. But, lo and behold, they have contributed a truly valuable
program here. Type in an area code and the first 3 digits of a phone
number and bingo, this program gives you all matching ZIP codes. The
reverse works as well, plus many similar look up functions. The EXE file
itself is small -- what makes this ARC so large are the data files, and
understandably so. Sysops doing registration of new users will immediately
perceive the value of this program (enough said, huh?). I suspect there
are quite a few other uses as well. U/L by Jack Kilday.

QWIK20.ARC 31258 12-09-86 Fast Screen Writes/Turbo Pascal 2.0 11/24/86
A susbstantial update to a good set of Turbo write routines:
Version 2.0 (11-24-86):
Complete revision for global access to paging, retrace, and
segment address. Permits formats in any column mode (40
80,120, or whatever).
Changed Qfill and Qattr for easier Row-by-Column blocks.
Added QfillC and QattrC for self-centering.
Added two page utilities.
Added two screen memory transfer utilities for Row-by-Column
blocks.
Increased speed of Qfill with attribute on CGA by 65% .
PCL12.ARC 57963 12-09-86 PC-Label 1.2 8/24/86: Repetitive label maker
A close call on whether to post this as the EXE file is obscenely large for
what it does (a function of dear old QuickBASIC, I'm afraid). The program
prints the same label over and over again, and allows you to print more
than 1 across the page. That's about it, but it happened to be useful to
me in one application (filling out some gummed labels) and it may be to you
as well. By the way, I found it easier to use LPT2DSK to capture the
output of this program to disk first, check it, make any changes, and then
print it externally.
FAKEFL31.ARC 28978 12-09-86 Create 0K/No cluster files/block uplds/v3.1 TP
Sysops will quickly understand what this program can do: By creating a 0K
file, you can block an upload by the same name -- the caller will be told
the file already exists. Typically, I've used COPY CON: to create 1-byte
files for this purpose, but they take up 2K on the hard disk due to DOS's
minimum file allocation scheme. Files created with FAKEFILE take up NO
space on disk; no clusters are allocated to the file at all. Yet, it's a
normal DOS file that you erase just like any other, and it doesn't seem to
bother CHKDSK at all. I had an earlier version of this program in the
SUPPORT conference, but as it is useful to non-PCBoard sysops and, perhaps,
to non-sysops, I've put this update in the main board. The Turbo Pascal
source for the program is also included in the arc.

FBUCKS.ARC 165888 12-09-86 FastBucks Checkbook/Home Budget Manager & more
From the docs, an edited (and expurgated) summary of features:
--- completely menu driven.
--- avoids the use of accounting language and "computerese".
--- automatically creates files and updates them. It is not
necessary for the user to ever remember or assign a file name.
--- supports up to 25 each checking, savings, and charge
accounts, and one cash sheet.
--- complete transaction editing is available ....
--- supports 32 printers ....
--- has a recursive budget model ....
--- has a financial calculation section that allows user to
calculate item depreciation, savings and loan information...
--- has a complete Loan amortization generator.
The data files are non-ascii, promoting compactness and speed but also
making them relatively inaccessible to other programs. Looks to be a good,
complete package. U/L by David Geerinck.

LISTFPO.ARC 9472 12-08-86 Emulates dBASE "LIST FILES" cmd in DOS 12/7/86
"LISTFPO allows you to display the databases on a given disk or
subdirectory, the number of records in each database and the date the
database was last updated. In short, it works like dBASE's "LIST FILE"
command, except that you don't need dBASE to get those information --
LISTFPO is normally run while you're in DOS."

terminate and stay resident program. It provides the ability to recall and
edit previous commands and allows much more sophisticated editing than is
found in the normal MSDOS system. HISTORY includes a search mechanism to
handle relatively large histories. HISTORY requires about 4700 bytes of
memory plus whatever is required for the history storage." As a PCED

thus uses more memory), this is not a program I'll be able to use, but it
looks excellent and full source code is also provided.

AMAXX230.ARC 82176 12-06-86 AUTOMAXX Menu System/PC Manager v2.30 11/8/86
U/L by Quang Truong. AutoMaxx is one of the best of the menu managers on
this system. In addition to the normal batch-file type menu functions,
AutoMaxx increasingly is becoming its own DOS shell/file manager so that
those functions are available within the menu system you design more or
less automatically. Other changes for this release:
"This revision gives the AUTOMAXX menu system a desk top display with
menu windows. A color install program is now available so that the
each user can customize the screen colors. The error handler has been
improved and the system is more user friendly. The 'whereis' file finding
option has been changed to pause when the screen is full. The other
features remain essentially unchanged."
COMMENT: This program has generated some controversy due to its initial
similarity to Marshall Magee's AUTOMENU program. Indeed, the program now
shows up on Newhouse's Dirty Dozen list as a hacked program. I disagree.
The author of AutoMaxx, William P. Smith, has made clear from the start
that AutoMaxx imitated some of the user-interface characteristics of
AutoMenu, but was written from scratch in another language (TP vs ASM).
While the programs started off very similar, AutoMaxx has continued to
evolve and added some useful capabilities. Magee has taken AutoMenu
commercial so I simply don't know how that program has changed recently
(the last shareware version remains on this system in AUTOMENU.ARC).
I happen not to be one of those who thinks it's necessarily a
copyright violation to imitate a program's interface. But, this issue is
in litigation in a number of cases, including Crosstalk v. Mirror (grin).
If the courts end up deciding I'm wrong, I'll take another look at whether
AutoMaxx belongs on this system. For now, I'm quite comfortable with it,
though I do recognize it's an issue where there's room for contrary opinion
(in short, good grief, I could be wrong!).

TAX86-2.ARC 105472 12-06-86 / BBS version prints draft return only
U/L by Fran Horvath. Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas and your tax forms are
due to arrive soon! Yes, folks, the tax prep programs are starting to show
up on the BBS systems again. It's that time.
This one is really very good. In the BBS version, you get almost
no documentation but I had this one up and running in a few minutes and
quickly figured out how it works. It's very friendly and I particularly
like the way it takes you from the lines on the 1040 to the supporting
schedules. Not all of the schedules in the full-fledged version are here,
and this BBS version will not print out a form that you can file with the
IRS, but it will print out a draft return and is otherwise complete enough
to give you both a usable program and an idea of what more the registered
version can do. One complaint: In a few places where you need to detail
an entry (e.g. sales resulting in gains and losses on Sched D), there just
weren't enough lines for entry. I don't know if the registered version
"corrects" this defect.

INPUT.ARC 3456 12-05-86 Input vbls to BATs (in env) -beats ANSWER
U/L by Tony Rood. "INPUT is a batch file utility to get console input from
within a batch file. There are several variants of this type of program in
the public domain. A common type uses the ERRORLEVEL to pass a keyboard
response to a BAT file. These type are limited to a single key transfer.
Another type, such as ANSWER, written by Frank Schweiger, prompts for a
console input, then puts the result into an Environment Variable. INPUT is
of this type, but adds some refinement. With INPUT, the response string is
set to upper case unless the 'bare' switch is used. A linefeed is sent to
the console after the response to allow a following ECHO command. In
addition, preceding and trailing blanks are removed in the default mode.
Another option lets the BAT file define the length of the string used in
the response." By William Parke, author of the excellents CATS program.

BOSS1114.ARC 141312 12-05-86 / MS-C 3 & 4, CI C86, Lattice, & DLC 11/14/86
This package has been reviewed several times before (updates seem quite

windowing packages on this system. You get more if you register, but the
BBS version is full-featured and reasonably well documented. This 11/14/86
revision didn't show up with the normal history file explaining the
changes, but one is apparent: Support for the Datalight C compiler has been
added to the package. If you work with any of the supported compilers,
